Why Greeting Unknown Visitors May Be One of the Most Effective School Security Practices
The most powerful words in school safety may be the simplest:
“Hello. May I help you?”
Those few words cost nothing. They require no software updates, batteries, artificial intelligence, or expensive equipment. Yet they can accomplish something many security technologies cannot:
They immediately let an unfamiliar person know they have been noticed.
At a time when schools are investing millions in cameras, AI weapons detection, access control systems, and panic buttons, one of the most effective school security practices remains one of the oldest: alert, engaged adults who are willing to politely acknowledge people they do not recognize.
School safety starts with people.
Why Is Greeting Unknown People an Effective School Security Strategy?
When a staff member calmly approaches an unfamiliar person with a simple, friendly greeting such as, “Hello. May I help you?”, several important things happen immediately.
First, the greeting communicates that adults on campus are observant and attentive.
Second, it provides legitimate visitors an opportunity to explain why they are there and receive assistance if needed.
Third, it allows staff to observe behavior.
Most authorized visitors respond naturally. Someone with malicious intent, however, may hesitate, avoid eye contact, become evasive, abruptly change direction, or simply leave campus altogether.
Those behavioral cues do not prove criminal intent, but they can provide valuable information long before an incident escalates.
School Safety Is Built on Situational Awareness
For more than four decades, we have emphasized this simple practice during school security assessments, consulting engagements, and staff training.
The goal is not confrontation. The goal is awareness.
Every school should strive to create a culture where adults are comfortable acknowledging unfamiliar people in a professional, courteous manner. Doing so reinforces one of the most important principles in school safety: everyone on campus should know that adults are actively supervising, observing, and paying attention.
Effective supervision is not passive. It is visible, mobile, engaged, and interactive.
A simple greeting reinforces that culture every day.
Even CISA Promotes the “Power of Hello”
This concept is not new.
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) encourages organizations to use what it calls the Power of Hello.
The idea is straightforward. Friendly engagement creates opportunities to identify people who need assistance while also helping staff recognize behaviors that warrant additional attention.
Rather than encouraging suspicion or confrontation, the approach promotes courteous interaction combined with situational awareness.
It is a people-centered security practice that complements physical security measures instead of replacing them.
Technology Has Value, But People Remain the First Line of Defense
Security technology has an important role in comprehensive school safety. But it doesn’t replace alert adults.
People notice behavior. They ask questions. People recognize when something simply does not seem right.
That human judgment remains one of the most valuable components of any comprehensive school security program.
During our school security and emergency preparedness assessments, we typically find schools with locked front entrances. Yet people still gain access by piggybacking behind authorized visitors or through exterior doors left propped open by students or staff.
That is why security cannot end at the front door. The next layer of protection is an alert staff member who calmly asks, “Hello, may I help you?” Interestingly, we’ve often had students question our presence before adults did. While that reflects student awareness, greeting unfamiliar adults should always be the responsibility of school staff, not students.
A Strong School Safety Culture Begins With A Few Simple Words
School safety is created through relationships, awareness, communication, and everyday actions that reinforce a culture of vigilance.
Sometimes the most effective school security strategy costs nothing.
It begins with a few simple words:
